STEP 25.º - Final synthesis

Storie delle Cose is a course of Politecnico di Torino that is given by the teacher Vittorio Marchis. In this course we are called to create a blog where we explore a color in a lots, if not every, aspects of it.
The color that I had was ametista [italian], amethyst [english], and because I am an Erasmus student I decided to write this blog totally in english.

This work was very interesting to do because it not only made me love this color more, but it opened my eyes to see the color behind the color itself and explore a new range of concepts. Which I find very interesting to my Design degree, where I use color very often in my design works.
The first thing I noticed when I started this work, with the posts ‘’Definitionof the Color’’, and ‘’The color Code’’ was that I could almost never separate the color from the gemstone that has the color on it.
The post ’’Foreigh Color’’ made me realize that almost in every language this color was prenounced the same way, which means that this gemstone that is associated to this color was very popular in everywhere.
I think this association happens because before all the new painting and printing tecniques where invented, the only way that people knew this shade of purple/violet has trought this gemstone, and now it’s impossible to disconnect on from another. After I started doing the post ‘’The color in myth’’ and ‘’Thecolor in music’’ understood that this color and gemstone had more to it, not only because there was ancient stories about it but because I started to have my own feelings about the color.
When I arrived to post ‘’The color in Science’’ I was surprised by the studies that have been done with this color and respective gemstone and the results where very interesting. I have to admit that I found myself loving this color more than I used to because of it’s effects in this studies.
It wasn’t difficult to realise that the movie I would choose for my color was going to be Alladin’s from Disney. The color fits perfectly because of the magic and mystery of this movie. On the ‘’Vignetta’’ post I found a caracter that is amethyst named and colored from some new comics.

Passing on to the ‘’Color in Design’’, I already knew that Karim Rashid used to use a lot of pinks/purples in his creations [actually pink is his favourite color] and it was not difficult to see a lot of his creations with amethyst color. On the Advertising and a more graphic aproach I discovered some posters that I collected from Behance [behance is a site here we can share some of our graphic design work]. The color in architecture was something I didn’t quite knew, because it is still a project, and it’s not completed.
On ‘’ABC’’ and ‘’Emblem’’ posts I could not left the gemstone appart because this duality makes a lot of sense and everything blends really well together. In the ‘’Document’’ it was intereting to see that there’s a lot of chemistry connected to the color. The ‘’Patent’’ has to do with jewerly, that is actually the way people used Amethyst in the past, and still in the present has you can see in Protagonist post.
Finding my color in the kitchen was not so easy, because I found more of artificial pigments to make food look this shade of purple/violet than real picmented food. So I made an effort to put some ingredients that are, naturaly amethyst colored.
The pictorial arts I found that artists where using this color to shake things a little bit, by introducing new colors in the nature palette that where always there but in a subtle way.
When I searched for the Fashion post, I found a lot of beautiful gowns from Elie Saab runway show, and all his collections was in this shade.
Because I came from Portugal, I’ve never saw a lot of animals with this color, but in the ‘’Wild Color’’ I found a specie of fishes that are exactly my color.
On the ‘’Anatomy of the Color’’ I tried to break down a little bit this connection with the gemstone so I didn’t repeat myself, so I tried to search some of the chakras meaning about this color.
‘’Color Cloud’’ was more of a resume of this concepts, and all the words I found that were really connected to this color.
After all, I have to say that, I fell in love with this color deeper and deeper trought the work, because I really got to know it well.

STEP 19.º - Color's anatomy

Wait, what?
Do I have to describe myself? But in what way?
Do I really need to?
Well okay, but just because you insist so much and I trust you. Hi there, my name is Amethyst, but my code name is hex #9966cc, starting with the physical part: I think I am not so dark but not fully light, part purple part violet.
In the emotional part I think I’m quite, mysterious a little bit shy. But afterall I’m a happy color, I also transmite to others calmness and knowledge. I lot of people think that I am precious… If I had to choose I think I would like to be a woman, because I think of myselft more feminine than masculine. I also think that I’am unsual, not everyone would pick me out of a chromatic palette at first, but that’s maybe because I’m diferente and edgy.

Violet/purple/ametista is the crown chakra color - our connection with the energy of heaven. Violet is the color of spirituality. It has the shortest wavelength and the highest vibration of the colors of the visible spectrum of light.
Violet offers and inner sense of wholeness. With wholeness comes a sense of ending, completion of a process, and a promise of something new, illumination, rebirth.
Violet connects with sadness of letting go and also with joy of transformation. There is peace and tranquility in the newfound knowledge of profound change.
Violet color is cleansing and purifying. It is the color of magic, ritual, cleansing, purifying, connecting, mystery, and mysticism.
It is a color that allows us to glimpse other realities, beyond our physical and material reality of this earthly existence. It is pure cosmic energy.
Violet is a color of reconciliation. Of bringing together polarities - male and female, day and night, hot and cold, heaven and earth, right brain and left brain.
In this state of balance, you feel the connection with other beings, with heaven, with earth, with all of Universe. There is no separation, no duality.
As you unfold the petals of your crown chakra, you find the seat of your wisdom. You assimilate knowledge and integrate it. You know and you understand. You manifest divinity.

Physical Level

On a physical crown chakra color violet relates to the cerebral cortex, the skull, and the brain.
People with balanced violet energy have all their chakras spinning smoothing, energy in their body is flowing freely from bottom to the top. They radiate health, peace, and effortless energy.

Mental Level

Violet people are open minded, curious, and deep thinkers. They love learning, studying, and reading. They question what they learn, introspect and find connections and patterns within everything. No subject is too dull or boring to learn.
The biggest challenge of violet on a mental level is when someone is too withdrawn and attached to the materialistic pursuits of this existence - overindulging in earthly pursuits and stuck in their way of thinking. Unwilling to open up to other ideas, thoughts, or knowledge.
Challenges
  • materialistic
  • greedy
  • dominates others
  • stuck in one way of thinking

Violet is an energy of completion - of an end of a cycle. It is a color of letting go, to give space for something new to be born.
On an emotional level, crown chakra color violet may contain deep grief and sadness, suffering within the joy of living, accepting the journey of life here on earth.
The challenge of violet energy is when it is blocked or excessive and it manifests as psychosis, dissociation from the body, being disconnected and ungrounded.
Challenges
  • psychosis
  • feeling overwhelmed
  • confusion, frustration

  • aware
  • emotionally balanced
  • peaceful, calm
  • joyful
  • connected with heaven and grounded here on earth

STEP 23.º - A Wild color

The Elusive Purple Betta
Outwardly, breeding for purple seems to be a simple matter of covering up a layer of red pigment on bettas with a layer of blue. Oftentimes it seems that some shades of royal blue lean towards purple/violet, and therefore it should only be a small step to bring them to a true purple shade. However, introducing red into a line of royals will usually only give the breeder blues with excessive red wash, or red/blue multicolors, No purple bettas. Some variations of purple body/secondary color fins have come out under the various names of Purple Gas, Purple Popsicle, Purple Salamander and the like, and these are very attractive fish, but are not by definition a pure, solid-colored purple like the artist's conceptual photo (also one of this site's most "stolen" photographs, indicative of the desire of betta lovers the world over wanting solid purple fish!).

To the protagonist of this color, amethyst, I think that it could be one of the sweden royal family, the Queen Silvia.
This lady wears, a lot of times, this shades of purple/violet in the clothes, but also the jewerly of the royal family has amethyst stones in it, has you can see in the next photo.

STEP 20.º - The color in fashion

Ellie Saab - 2014

Elie Saab for Paris Fashion week 2014 has created a few dresses with all the same shades of color, in which I think amethyst is in.
They are really delicate and gives us the feeling of calmness.

STEP 18.º - Pictorial Arts

La tondeuse de moutons Vincent Van Gogh,1889
Vincent van Gogh was confronted with the colour theories of Charles Blanc in 1884.This book was one of the most important sources of inspiration for Van Gogh’s use of colour. Blanc gave a clear overview of the theory in which the contemporary colours played a key role. These are colours positioned opposite of each other on the colour circle and which are enforced when placed next to each other (red-green, blue-orange, purple-yellow). Van Gogh started experimenting with these contrasts in Nuenen

STEP 16.º - In Design

About the Designer:
He's an alien who understands the world, who has subverted the rules of design, teaching us that pink can be a dominant color and that plastic is both a noble and democratic material.
His passion is electronic music and, as if on the decks, Karim Rashid simultaneously directs dozens and dozens of projects, with the same unmistakable touch, whether he's designing a soap dispenser, graphics for a credit card or the architecture of a building.
Since a few years his headquarters is in Hell's Kitchen, on the west side of Manhattan, where the naturalized Canadian designer works in a luminous open space connected to his home via an internal garden.

STEP 22.º - The color in architecture

Building Project
Dutch practice NL architects has developed proposal for a chain of hotels, with a design that takes its form from that of a precious gemstone. intended to promote the supposed healing qualities of an amethyst – a precious stone consisting of a violet variety of quartz – the building appears sliced in half, revealing the seemingly natural forms inside.

Internally, the hotel’s accommodation is placed around a large void, with access to each room organized along the outer perimeter. the inner layer is then formed by crystalline clusters that organically frame the interiors. the first amethyst hotel is planned for ocean flower in china, a man-made island currently under development in the sea north of hainan. over time is it imagined that a chain of such designs will be constructed in different locations around the world.

STEP 14.º - Color in chemistry

Amethyst is most prevalente as smal stubby pyramidal crystals, although several localities such as the Mexican occurrences are well-known for producing elegantly tal prismatic crystals, which are very highly regarded by collectores. Amethyst also forms the internal lining of geodes, some of which can be over 10 feet tal and weighing several tons.

STEP 8.º - Conventional Wisdom

Throughout history the special virtue of Amethyst has been that of preventing drunkenness and overindulgence. Ancient Greeks and Romans routinely studded their goblets with Amethyst believing wine drunk from na Amethyst cup was powerless to intoxicate, and a stone worn on the body, especially at the navel, had a sobering effect, not only for inebriation but in over-zealousness in passion. Catholic bishops also wore Amethyst in a ring to protect from mystical intoxication. Kissing the ring kept others from similar mystical intoxication and kept them grounded in spiritual thought.
Nowadays, the color is still attached to the stone, but there're more meanings to this such as in the urban dictionary:

And also, on the regular dictionary:

STEP 7.º - Color in Cinema

The seventh step was easy to choose for me, because Alladin, the Disney movie, has introduced to me when I was young.
This magical movie has a variaty of shades of purple, blues and pinks has main colors in which Ametista can be identified.

STEP 6.º - The color in science

While even the most open-minded person in search of useful and safe healing alternatives may balk at such claims;, the value of Amethyst as a healing alternative is neither legend nor myth. Rather, it’s an established fact based on a number of studies and conclusions from health experts, including the following:
Image Font
  • - The Homeopathy School of Colorado studied five groups of students over a five year period, and concluded that Amethyst had a positive healing effect on head pains, nerve involvement of the extremities, and female symptoms.
  • - The Sa Pharmaceutical Journal explored the various healing benefits associated with gemstones such as Amethyst. These included circulation problems, epilepsy, headache, infertility, insomnia, muscle spasms, nervousness, pain, rheumatism and wounds.
  • - Dr. Goupil Sharma noted that Amethyst  can successfully be used for problems in the blood, breathing problems, and problems related to lack of mental clarity or alertness.
  • - Health researcher Geoffrey Keyte noted that Amethyst delivers a number of energetic healing benefits, including improved creativity, relaxation, peace, stability, and even psychic abilities.

Furthermore, it’s well-known that Amethyst generates far infrared radiation and emits negative ions. There are a number of established health benefits and properties associated with far infrared radiation, including improved sleep, improved blood circulation, improved circulation of bodily fluids, improved mood and outlook, improved wound healing, and improved ability to ward off bacteria. Similarly, there are many known health benefits and properties of negative ions, including improved removal of toxic particles from the body and improved respiration.
At the same time, since Amethyst is a quartz, it instantly doubles the size of the human biomagnetic field. That’s why many people claim that they feel better or more energized within seconds of simply standing or sitting near Amethyst – especially if they’re struggling with low energy, depression or a physical ailment.
Indeed, while some methods used in ancient times should be left alone and regarded as “good ideas at the time – but certainly not for our time,” the use of Amethyst is enjoying a renaissance as a valuable, safe, scientifically-validated and 100% medication-free health alternative that’s suitable for people of all ages (and pets, too!).

STEP 5.º - The color in music

The color in music is the theme of this post, while I was searching for this matter I found some musics, even a band, called ''Amethyst'', the english version of ''Ametista''.
But the only one I think transmites the essence of this color is the music under this text.
I think it has a mystery to it, something we cannot figure out complete, and that's the beauty of this color, the mysteriousness.
It's eletronic type of music, by the artist Hudson Mohawke, and it was launched this month, November 2016.

STEP 4.º - The color in the myth

L’Amethyste by Alphonse Mucha,
from the Precious Stones series, 1900

The name ‘’Amethyst’’ derives from the Greek word ametusthos, meaning ‘’not intoxicated’’, and comes from na ancient legend. The wine god Bacchus, angry over na insult and determined to avenge himself decreed the first person he should meet would be devoured by tigers. The unfortunate mortal happened to be a beautiful maiden named Amethyst on her way to worship at the shrine of Diana. As the ferocious beasts sprang, she sought the protection of the goddess and was saved by being turned into a clear, white crystal. Bacchus, regretting his cruelty, poured the juice of his grapes over the stone as na offering, giving the gem its lovely purble hue.
